Civic Connection Corner: Learning to Lead Locally

Theme Purpose:

To introduce Asian Americans and their neighbors to approachable, everyday civic opportunities—such as school boards, city councils, advisory committees, and community boards—and to show how participation strengthens shared community life, not just representation.

This session focuses on making civic engagement friendly, welcoming, and doable for people of all backgrounds. It highlights how Asian Americans contribute to civic life while also learning from others who share the same neighborhoods and concerns.

Group Size

5–20 participants.

Time Needed

60 minutes.

Materials

Local government brochures or website printouts

Large paper & markers

Index cards for personal action steps

Optional: guest speaker from local government or community organization

Step-by-Step Program

1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)

Host Script:

“Welcome to today’s Civic Connection Corner. Our goal is simple: to help everyone—Asian Americans and neighbors from all backgrounds—understand how local civic life works and how we can participate together.

This session is not about titles or politics. It’s about everyday people learning how to show up, contribute, and help shape a community where everyone feels included.”

2. Quick Share (5 minutes)

Ask participants:
“What is one thing in our community you’d like to see improved?”

Write responses on large paper.
This reinforces that everyone’s voice matters, and we all share responsibility for local improvement.

3. Learn the Local Landscape (15 minutes)

Present a short overview of:

1. City/town council or county board

2. School board

3. Community committees (arts, parks, planning)

4. Volunteer boards

Explain how to attend a meeting, speak during public comment, or join as a member.

4. Connect the Dots (15 minutes)

Match ideas from Step 2 to the appropriate civic office or board.
Discuss:

How diverse cultural perspectives help shape better solutions

How Asian American experiences and neighbor experiences contribute to shared community priorities

Why representation is not about recognition, but about participation and collaboration

This reinforces the DOI250AA message:
Asian Americans lead by contributing to the community alongside others.

5. Action Planning (15 minutes)

Each participant writes one action step on an index card:

“I will attend a city council meeting this month.”

“I will explore volunteer roles at the library board.”

“I will bring my perspective to a school meeting.”

Then they pair up to share their steps and build gentle accountability.

The emphasis: not big accomplishments, just small, meaningful steps forward.

6. Reflection & Closing (5 minutes)

Participants write short reflections:

One helpful civic opportunity they learned about

How their voice—Asian American or otherwise—can contribute to the community’s shared future

One insight about working with people from different backgrounds
