Community Talent Share: Skills That Connect Us

Theme Purpose:

To bring neighbors of all backgrounds together to share small, everyday skills — calligraphy, origami, music, gardening tips, cooking techniques, bike repair, sewing, simple crafts, and more — and to highlight how these skills create connection, understanding, and shared community life.

This session is not about performing or showcasing talent. It is about hands-on engagement, mutual respect, and seeing the value each person brings.

It also encourages participants to recognize how Asian American skills, traditions, and creativity influence and enrich our shared spaces.

Group Size

5–15 people.

Time Needed

60–90 minutes total.

Materials

  • Small table or open space for demonstrations

  • Any personal tools or materials needed for the skill (participants bring their own)

  • Chairs for audience members

  • Paper & pens for note-taking or drawing what they learned

Step-by-Step Program

1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)

Host Script:

“Welcome to the Community Talent Share. Each of us carries skills — some passed down through heritage, some learned after coming to America, and some picked up through everyday life. Today is not about performing, but about sharing and learning from one another.

This gathering is part of DOI250AA, an Asian American–led initiative that invites people from every background to contribute to community life as we approach America’s 250th year. By sharing our skills and stories, we strengthen our connections and see how our experiences intertwine.”

2. Icebreaker (5–10 minutes)

Each person says their name and one skill they can share or one they’d like to learn.

3. Talent Demonstrations (40–60 minutes)

Each participant has 5–7 minutes to share their skill.

They may:

Demonstrate or explain the skill

Share how they learned it (family tradition, elder, teacher, friend, self-taught)

Describe how this skill has helped them connect with others — especially in cross-cultural or community settings

Invite simple questions or let others try a small part of the skill

Encourage all participants — Asian American or not — to talk about where their skill comes from and how skill-sharing strengthens community ties.

4. Group Reflection (5–10 minutes)

Prompts:

“What’s one skill you’d like to try after today?”

“How did hearing each other’s stories help you understand our community differently?”

“What skills could we use to bring people together in the future?”

This shifts the focus from individual talent to community relationship-building.

5. Closing & Positive Action (5–10 minutes)

Step 1 – Reflection Notes

Ask participants to write:

One skill or idea they learned today

One small way they can use their own skills to connect with others

One insight they gained about working across cultures or generations

Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA

Encourage participants to submit:

A photo

A short write-up

Or a simple video clip about the skill they shared or learned.

Mention the thank-you learning incentive from BoostInMinutes.com for those who submit their reflections.

Host Closing Script:

“Skills connect people. When we share what we know — and learn from our neighbors — we build trust, curiosity, and connection. Thank you for contributing your time, your creativity, and your stories to our community today.”

Optional Add-ons

  • Skill Swap Board: Post skills participants are willing to teach or learn.
  • Follow-Up Workshop: Schedule a deeper class for one or two of the skills shared.
  • Youth Participation: Encourage young people to share even small skills, like making a snack, folding paper, or simple crafts.
