Music & Poetry Exchange: Voices Across Cultures
Theme Purpose:
To use music, poetry, and spoken word as gentle bridges across cultures.
Participants share pieces from their heritage while also learning from the expressions of others.
This exchange builds mutual respect, strengthens cultural understanding, and shows how Asian American stories and the stories of our neighbors all contribute to the American cultural landscape.
The goal is not performance or spotlight — it is shared presence, shared listening, and shared learning.
Group Size
5–15 participants (plus audience if open to the public).
Time Needed
60–90 minutes.
Materials
- Chairs arranged in a circle or semicircle
- Optional: microphone and small speaker for better sound

Step-by-Step Program
1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)
Host Script:
“Welcome to the Music & Poetry Exchange. Today, we’re sharing pieces of our cultures — songs, poems, sayings, and spoken word — not to perform, but to connect.
This gathering is part of the Asian American–led DOI250AA initiative, which invites all of us to learn from one another as the country approaches 250 years.
By listening to each other’s voices, we understand more about who we are as neighbors, community members, and fellow contributors to America’s shared story.”
2. Icebreaker (5 minutes)
Invite participants to share briefly:
Their name
Their family’s heritage or cultural background
A favorite song, poem, or saying from that culture
Encourage a warm, non-judgmental tone — this is discovery, not performance.
3. Sharing Round (40–50 minutes)
Each participant:
Each participant may:
Share a short song, poem, phrase, instrumental piece, or spoken word (live or played from a device).
Explain briefly:
Its cultural or personal background
When it’s typically used (festival, family tradition, childhood, faith, humor, etc.)
Why it matters to them
Provide a simple translation or meaning if in another language.
Encourage space for:
Asian American participants to share elements of their cultural journey
Neighbors and friends of any background to share their heritage or experiences
Everyone to reflect on what they learn from one another
This keeps the exchange mutual and community-building, not one-sided.
4. Reflection & Discussion (10–15 minutes)
Prompts:
“What emotions or memories did you feel while listening today?”
“What similarities or shared values did you notice between cultures?”
“How can music and poetry help our community understand each other better?”
“What did you learn about Asian American experiences or the experiences of others?”
This reinforces the idea that every culture adds to shared community life.
5. Closing & Positive Action (5–10 minutes)
Step 1 – Reflection Notes
Invite participants to write:
One piece they learned about today.
How the sharing relates to their own story or values.
One way they can foster cultural connection in everyday life.
Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA
Encourage participants to submit:
The text or lyrics of their piece
A short reflection
Or a brief recording (optional)

Host Closing Script:
“Thank you for sharing your voices today. Every note and every line we exchanged becomes part of our community’s shared journey. When we learn from each other’s cultures, we build the understanding, trust, and connection that strengthen us all.”
Optional Add-ons
- Translation Challenge: Pair participants to translate each other’s piece into their own language.

Joint Performance: End with a group performance blending elements from multiple cultures.

Youth Feature: Have a special section where youth present modern pieces inspired by traditional ones.

Recording Archive: Record the event and create a digital library for the community.
