Neighbors’ Walk & Talk: Walking Through Our Stories
Theme Purpose:
To bring neighbors together for a simple group walk where people share personal, cultural, and community experiences. The goal is to foster connection, understanding, and shared belonging, showing how Asian Americans and all community members contribute to the places we live.
This activity highlights not only Asian American presence, but also the experiences of those who live, work, and grow alongside Asian American communities.
It’s about walking together, learning from one another, and seeing our community through each other’s eyes.
Group Size
4–15 people.
Time Needed
45–60 minutes total (including walk and group talk).
Materials
- Comfortable walking route (sidewalk, park path, school yard, community street)
- Optional: small notepads for jotting reflections
- Camera/phone to capture moments (with permission)
Step-by-Step Program
1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)
Host Script:
“Welcome to ‘Neighbors’ Walk & Talk.’ Today we’re taking a short walk together to share experiences about our lives, our roots, and our community. This gathering is part of DOI250AA — an Asian American–led initiative for community connection as our country approaches 250 years.
This isn’t about one group telling their story. It’s about learning from each other, hearing different experiences, and seeing how our stories—Asian American and non-Asian American—shape the community we share.”
2. Walk & Share (30–35 minutes)
Walk in pairs or small groups. Switch partners halfway.
Use the prompts that feel natural:
Share a moment when you first felt connected to this community.
What is one tradition or memory from your heritage that’s meaningful to you?
Have you learned something valuable from someone of a different background?
What makes you feel a sense of belonging here?
3. Group Reflection (5–10 minutes)
Gather at the end point and invite volunteers to share:
“One thing I learned from someone today…”
“Something that surprised me…”
“One small way our community can grow closer…”
4. Closing & Positive Action (5 minutes)
Step 1 – Reflection Notes
Ask participants to jot down:
One insight from their conversations
How walking and talking changed their view of the community
One way they can help foster connection or understanding
Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA
Encourage participants to submit their insights on the DOI250AA website.
Remind them of the free Workplace Etiquette & Professionalism course from BoostInMinutes.com for participants who share their event experience.
Host Closing Script:
Thank you for walking and sharing together. Our streets hold many stories, and today we added new ones — side by side. Your reflections help us understand how Asian Americans and all community members contribute to the journey toward America’s 250th year.
