Our Hands, Our History: Crafting Culture Connections
Theme Purpose:
To use simple, hands-on creative activities as a way to share and understand cultural traditions. Participants create small artworks inspired by the cultural roots that shape their families and communities — including, but not limited to, Asian American heritage.
As people create and explain the meaning behind their designs, they discover how traditions from different cultures connect, evolve, and enrich American life today.
This reflects DOI250AA’s mission: Asian American–led community building that strengthens understanding among all cultures.
Group Size
5–15 people.
Time Needed
60–90 minutes.
Materials
- Low-cost supplies: colored paper, markers, glue, scissors
- Optional: fabric scraps, beads, yarn, clay, or recycled materials

Step-by-Step Program
1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)
Host Script:
“Welcome to ‘Our Hands, Our History: Crafting Culture Connections.’ Today, we’ll make something with our hands that reflects our heritage or personal story — whether from Asian American traditions, the places our families come from, or cultures we’ve joined along the way.
As we create, we’ll share the stories and values behind our designs and learn how traditions shape the way we live, contribute, and connect with others in America.
This gathering is part of DOI250AA, an Asian American–led initiative focused on bringing people together and strengthening community understanding as America approaches its 250th year.”
2. Cultural Inspiration Sharing (5–10 minutes)
Show examples of patterns or symbols from various cultures.
Invite participants to share an object, photo, or memory that inspires them.
Discuss what these designs mean in their culture and how such traditions adapt to life in the U.S.
3. Creative Session (30–45 minutes)
Participants create a small art piece or symbolic design. Encourage relaxed conversation with prompts like:
“How is this tradition practiced in your family today?”
“Has it changed as you’ve lived in different places?”
“What values does this design represent for you?”
The focus is connection, not artistic perfection.
4. Story Sharing & Cultural Connection (15–20 minutes)
Each participant briefly explains:
What their piece represents
The cultural or personal meaning behind it
How this tradition or symbol connects to their life in America
What they hope others will understand or appreciate
Keep the tone warm, reflective, and welcoming of all backgrounds.
5. Reflection on Integration (5–10 minutes)
Prompts:
“What did you learn about another culture today?”
“How do shared values show up across different traditions?”
“How can activities like this help us build stronger community relationships?”
Participants write a short reflection for the DOI250AA website.
6. Closing & Positive Action (5 minutes)
Step 1 – Reflection Notes
Write down:
One cultural insight you gained
One way you can share or apply this insight in your daily life
Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA
Encourage participants to upload a photo and short story about their creation.

Host Closing Script:
“These small creations are reminders of where we come from and how our cultures grow together. When we share our traditions in ways others can see and appreciate, we build understanding — one creative moment at a time.”
Optional Add-ons
Community Display: Exhibit the artworks with captions in a school, library, or community center.
Culture Blend Pairing: Pair participants from different cultures to create a joint piece blending symbols or patterns.
Local History Link: Include community-specific symbols (e.g., school emblems, city icons) to show shared belonging.
