Photographs & Stories: Capturing Our Journey
Theme Purpose:
To bring people of all backgrounds together to share photographs — old or recent — and tell the stories behind them.
Photos become a window into migration, childhood, milestones, family traditions, community life, and the everyday moments that connect us. This activity strengthens intergenerational bonds, deepens empathy, and highlights how Asian American stories contribute to (and grow alongside) the many experiences that shape American life.
It supports DOI250AA’s mission: Asian American–led community building grounded in shared understanding and collective memory as our nation approaches its 250th year.
Group Size
4–20 people.
Time Needed
60–90 minutes total.
Materials
- Printed photographs (participants bring their own)
- Optional: projector or laptop for digital photo viewing
- Paper & pens for jotting down notes or captions
- A display table or wall space to arrange photos
Step-by-Step Program
1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)
Host Script:
“Welcome to ‘Photographs & Stories.’ Today we’ll share photos that reflect meaningful moments in our families or communities. These images help us understand one another’s histories, traditions, and journeys — whether rooted in Asian American experiences, local community life, or stories from other cultural backgrounds.
This gathering is part of DOI250AA, an Asian American–led initiative focused on creating spaces where all communities can learn from one another as we prepare for America’s 250th year.”
2. Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Choose one:
Share your name and where the photo you brought was taken.
Share one word that describes how the photo makes you feel.
Share one memory connected to the moment in the picture.
3. Photo Sharing (40–50 minutes)
Each participant:
Shows their photograph (printed or digital).
Tells the story behind it:
Who is in the photo?
Where and when was it taken?
What was happening?
Why does it matter to you or your family?
Connects the moment to today:
How has this memory influenced your life or identity?
What does it show about community, belonging, or cultural values?
Encourage participants to speak at their own pace — no performance, no pressure.
4. Group Reflection (10 minutes)
Prompts:
“What did you learn from these photos?”
“Which moments or emotions felt familiar across cultures?”
“How do these images show the ways our communities grow and contribute to America’s story?”
5. Closing & Positive Action (5–10 minutes)
Step 1 – Reflection Notes
Participants write:
One photo or story that stayed with them
How it inspires them to be a good neighbor or community member
One way they can help preserve or share their own family’s memories
Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA
Encourage participants to upload their photo (or a digital scan) with a short write-up.
Mention BoostInMinutes.com incentives.
Host Closing Script:
“Our photographs hold memories that help others understand who we are and how far our families have come. When we share them, we connect our personal histories to the wider American story — past, present, and future.”
Optional Add-ons
- Memory Wall: Arrange all photos with short captions for display.
- Digital Archive: Create a shared online folder for the images.
- Then & Now Pairing: Participants bring an old photo and a recent one to compare.
