Then & Now: Life in Two Worlds

Theme Purpose:

To reflect on how life has changed across generations — in traditions, education, work, family life, and community participation — and to understand how those changes shape who we are today.

This gathering uplifts Asian American stories alongside the experiences of others, highlighting resilience, adaptation, and contributions while also recognizing the shared journey of everyone who calls America home.

The session supports DOI250AA’s purpose: Asian American–led community building that connects generations, honors the past, and strengthens the future through mutual understanding.

Group Size

5–15 people.

Time Needed

60–75 minutes total.

Materials

  • Paper & pens for note-taking

  • Optional printed “Then & Now” comparison sheets

  • Chairs arranged in a circle or around a table

Step-by-Step Program

1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)

Host Script:

“Welcome to ‘Then & Now: Life in Two Worlds.’ Today we’ll reflect on what life was like in earlier years — whether in another country, in our first years in America, or in a different stage of life — and compare it with how things are today.

This is part of DOI250AA, an Asian American–led initiative inviting people of all backgrounds to share experiences as we approach America’s 250th year. By understanding how our lives have changed, we strengthen our appreciation for one another and our shared future.”

2. Icebreaker (5–10 minutes)

Invite participants to share:

Their name

Their family’s heritage or place of origin (if applicable)

One small thing they miss from the past or one thing they appreciate about today

This sets a gentle and reflective tone.

3. Sharing Rounds (40–50 minutes)

Each participant responds to the following prompts:

What was life like then?
(childhood, early years in America, or an earlier chapter of life)

What is life like now in that same area?
(education, work, technology, traditions, community involvement)

What is one positive change you’ve noticed over time?

How can we bring the best of the past into the future?

Encourage participants to speak honestly, without judgment or comparison.
The goal is to recognize growth, continuity, and shared experiences.

4. Group Reflection (5–10 minutes)

Prompts:

“What have we collectively gained over time?”

“Which values or traditions feel important to preserve?”

“What does it mean to contribute positively to the community we share today?”

This reinforces connection across age, culture, and experience.

5. Closing & Positive Action (5–10 minutes)

Step 1 – Reflection Notes

Write down:

1. One thing from the past to preserve.

2. One change today that makes life better.

Step 2 – Submit to DOI250AA

  • Encourage participants to upload a short write-up to the DOI250AA website.

Host Closing Script:

“Thank you for sharing your stories today. By remembering where we came from and appreciating the progress we’ve made, we strengthen our ability to build a connected and inclusive future together. Our stories — past, present, and future — all contribute to America’s ongoing journey.”

Optional Add-ons

  • Photo Comparison: Bring one old and one recent photo to show.
  • Generational Pairing: Have older and younger participants interview each other.
  • Local History Link: Include short facts about Asian American history in the area.
