Heritage Show-and-Tell: Asian American Keepsakes & Memories
Theme Purpose:
To invite participants to share a meaningful object that represents their family’s heritage, migration story, cultural tradition, or life journey — and to use these objects as starting points for understanding how our experiences connect with America’s shared story.
This activity encourages curiosity, cross-cultural listening, and personal connection.
It reflects DOI250AA’s purpose: Asian American–led community building that welcomes all backgrounds into a space of understanding, equality, and shared belonging.
Group Size
4–20 people.
Time Needed
60–90 minutes total.
Materials
- A table or safe display area for objects
- Chairs in a circle or around the table
- Paper & pens for note-taking

Step-by-Step Program
1. Welcome & Purpose (5 minutes)
Host Script:
“Welcome to Heritage Show-and-Tell. Each of us carries memories through the objects we keep — something passed down from family, brought from another place, or tied to an important experience here in America. Today we’ll share those keepsakes, listen to one another’s stories, and reflect on how our journeys weave into the community we share.
This gathering is part of DOI250AA, an Asian American–led initiative inviting people of all backgrounds to connect, learn, and contribute as America approaches its 250th year.”
2. Icebreaker (10 minutes)
Choose one option:
Option A — One Word
Share one word that describes how you feel about your family’s heritage or cultural identity.
Option B — Mini Memory
Share an early memory of an object, tradition, or moment from your cultural background.
This primes participants for gentle storytelling.
3. Show-and-Tell (30–35 minutes)
Each participant:
Each participant takes a turn:
1. Display the item
Examples: photo, recipe, clothing, document, book, symbolic object, tool, artwork, handmade craft, family memento.
2. Share the story behind it
Prompts:
Where did this item come from?
Who did it belong to?
Why is it meaningful to you or your family?
How does it relate to your life here in America?
3. Connect it to the bigger picture
Prompts:
What does this keepsake reveal about your journey or values?
How does it reflect resilience, adaptation, or connection?
How does it help you relate to people from other cultures today?
Encourage participants of all backgrounds to take part — Asian American or not — reinforcing inclusion.
4. Reflection & Collaboration (5–10 minutes)
Discussion prompts:
“What similarities did you hear across our stories?”
“How do these objects show connection between cultures and generations?”
“How do these stories help us feel more understood in the community?”
This helps everyone see shared threads, not differences.
5. Closing & Positive Action (10 minutes)

Participants write:
Something meaningful they learned from another person’s keepsake
One way they can use their own story to connect with other cultures
One thought about how they want to contribute to community life
Step 2 — Submit to DOI250AA
Invite participants to submit a short reflection and a photo of their keepsake to the DOI250AA website.

Host Closing Script:
“Thank you for sharing your stories today. These keepsakes remind us that every journey — Asian American or otherwise — adds to the fabric of our communities. When we share our histories with openness and respect, we help strengthen understanding and create a future where everyone feels they belong.”
Optional Add-ons
- Keepsake Catalog: Create a simple PDF or photo collage of everyone’s objects and stories.
- Traveling Display: Share the items at a local library, school, or community hall.
- Family Project: Have families work together to choose and present their keepsake.
